Your marriage absolutely needs date nights, at least monthly.
Heck I know some couples who do a weekly date night and you would think that could get costly right? Well, I want to give you some cheap date ideas for married couples because your marriage SO deserves it.
We get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of our job, the stresses of life and running all around town making sure our kids are living their best lives. But, we can’t forget about our marriages in the meantime.
Just as we make all those other things a priority, date night with our spouses need to take priority too.
I love a good date night, but I don’t always have the funds to have such an elaborate date night with my husband. Date night does not have to break the bank.
Actually some of the best experiences can happen when you are being frugal with it because it gets your creative juices flowing. And I’m here to help you do just that.
So here are some frugal date ideas for married couples, or for couples in general. You’ll have an inexpensive, but still romantic date night with your significant other.

Have a picnic
When was the last time you went on an actual picnic? It’s probably been a while. You and your spouse can pack a lunch and have a picnic at the park.
Make sure to get the picnic basket and blanket, the whole nine. Pack your favorite snacks, make sandwiches and have fun spending quality time together.
Of course, the weather has to be in agreement too, which can be a downfall to this one.
Go to the beach
I can’t think of too many other environments that are as relaxing as being near water. Even if you’re not a sand person because Lord knows I’m not, the beach can be the perfect date.
Go later in the evening and watch the sunset as you walk the boardwalk.
Stop and enjoy the calmness and peacefulness that the water brings. Most boardwalks have benches, so take a moment to be still and just be in the moment.
Reminisce on the earlier days of your marriage because more than likely, those are the days that had you really feeling mushy inside… You know the times when he/she gave you butterflies.
Bike ride through park
Stroll through the park on your bikes. If you don’t have a bike, find a community venue that rents them out.
An alternative is riding a segway through the town. My husband and I recently went out with another couple and the city we were in had a bunch of people cruising on segways (ya know, those things the mall cops ride on).
They looked super fun and it’s definitely something different than our usual dates, AND inexpensive too.
Host a game night
With game nights, you could leave it as just you and your spouse playing a bunch of games. Or, you could invite a few other couples over and have a small get together.
And don’t feel like since you’re hosting it, you have to spend a ton of money either. Have each couple bring a food dish to lower the cost on your end.
Create a scavenger hunt
This requires literally no money whatsoever, just a little bit of creative juice.
A very interesting idea is a photo scavenger hunt. You can find a scavenger hunt list you like online. Search “photo scavenger hunt for couples” or check out this one.
Then go hunting and take photos of you both completing the task.
Cook a 4-course meal together
Ahh, who doesn’t like a fancy meal? You and your significant other can create the 4 course menu together. Go shopping for the ingredients together. Then cook the meal together.
You see the pattern there? Together! Together makes everything better. Ok, that was corny but you get my point.
Make breakfast in bed
Most likely you already have the ingredients in the house anyway… so you could definitely have a breakfast date.
Don’t forget your breakfast tray to really make it feel like a legit date.
Take turns serving each other breakfast in bed.
Make a new recipe together
If you or your spouse enjoy trying new things, you guys could venture out and attempt to try cooking a new recipe together.
It could be as exotic and different as you want it.
Or simply try a new recipe from another culture – think Indian, Mexican, Italian etc.
FREE-99 hunny, that’s what we like over here.
Is there a sport or an activity that you and your spouse have in common? If so, choose to do it with each other.
Or just go and workout together. Heck, make a routine of it and you have that ongoing quality time together already set.
And you both end up getting fit and health at the same time, WIN-WIN.
Dinner and a movie
This may be one of the most used date nights. Especially if you’re anything like us… whenever we don’t really feel like thinking about where to go and what to do, dinner and a movie it is.
Go somewhere that gives you big servings like Texas Roadhouse or Cheddar’s and share an appetizer or share a meal.
To save at the movie theater, go on the days when they have discounts. I’m sure at least one movie theater in your area offers a discount day.
But girl, if this is your date night idea each and every time, it’s time to switch it up.
Wine tasting is a simple yet pleasurable way to spend some time together. Typically you’ll only have to pay an admission fee to the tasting. That’ll give you the opportunity to taste as many wines as your taste buds so desire.
Even if you and your significant other are not crafty people, you guys can go learn a new craft together. Check out your local craft stores like Joann’s and Michael’s. Visit a local artist’s shop or a fine arts center in your area.
There’s so many crafts that you both could enjoy together – candle making, watercolor painting, pottery, glass blowing etc.
The opportunities are almost endless.
Take a love language quiz
This one is a must if you and your significant other have been having any difficulty connecting recently. You both could totally have different love languages.
A love language is basically how you show your love and affection for your spouse, or what makes you feel loved.
So you each take a love language quiz and find out how you both like to feel loved. Enhance the connection and enhance your affection for one another.
Shoot pool at a local bar
This one will only run you a very small amount of money. But sometimes a real chill and relaxed night will hit the spot.
Go shoot pool. Now personally, I can’t shoot a lick of pool but I think it’s really fun and laid-back and a nice time to enjoy with my husband.
Train for a 5K/10K
Train for a 5K or 10K or even a marathon together. You guys will end up testing your fitness limits in the company of each other.
Then afterwards, you both could give each other massages and massage those sore areas on one another.
My husband was just showing me something called the bubble run and it’s a family event (and also free) that they host during the summer. But pretty much they have a bunch of bubbles that you kind of run or walk through but it’s a 5K. And did I mention it was free?
You can go check it out at bubblerun.com. They’ll give you a list of cities that they will be in.
Stay up all night with each other
You can take it back to the old days and stay up all night with your significant other just hanging out talking to each other. Get to know each other again.
This is something I have not done in years especially since having kids. But sometimes it’s good to take it back to the beginning, and do some of the things that you did in the beginning that drew you guys together.
Check out the city/county community calendar
Another thing you guys can do is look up the website to your city or county. Search for the event calendar and see what free and paid events are going on for the month.
Where I live, in the summertime, they often have block parties that are advertised on the city calendar.
This is also a good way to find some different types of activities than you’re used to – it’s worth checking out.
Partake in a library event
The library is one of my favorite ways to do events and activities at a very low cost.
Libraries often have an event calendar listed online – see what events are taking place at the library that month.
My library has routine coupon swap days, paint nights, as well as free yoga classes.
But depending on where you are, you may be able to find some really neat events to attend for free at your local library.
If you enjoy a mixed drink or two (or beer), then happy hour is something that you and your significant other can do.
Usually your favorite restaurants will have certain times throughout the day when you can get really good deals on drinks. You can also check out some of the local bars.
Take a walk
Simply take a walk in the next neighborhood over or go walk the town and people watch. A few drinks make everything more fun.
Go to an open mic
Usually, you can find at least one free open mic event in your local area. Typically, open mic consists of spoken word, standup comedy, singing and more. Spend the night admiring other peoples’ God given talents. Or perform a talent for your spouse.
Attempt a YouTube tutorial
You can literally find any and everything on YouTube. What’s something you and your spouse want to learn how to do?
Look it up on YouTube and commit to learning how to do it during your next date night.
Go to an arcade
You’ll have to be careful with this one because going to an arcade can eat up your date night budget for sure. You’ll end up having so much fun playing all the games and racking up all the points that could cause you to keep spending money on more credits.
Some places have even created old school arcades where they only have the arcade games from back in the day. You’ll appreciate traveling back in time to your childhood and some of those childhood memories will become so vivid again. This is the perfect time to clue your spouse in on some of those memories they never knew about.
Who knew visiting an arcade with your significant other could bring about deeper connections?
Visit an art gallery
Some art galleries are free and then others are very inexpensive.
You know you’ve seen a movie before where the couple stand there and gaze at a piece of art trying to interpret it. You don’t have to be an art fanatic to do this.
Learn more about either other’s mind and why you both see what you see in the artwork.
Plan a date for $20
Planning a date on an extremely low budget is super fun. It really shows just how creative you can get and how money doesn’t have to be a driving factor for a good time.
You guys can take turn planning $20 dates and make it sort of a competition. Who came up with the best date idea? Whose idea was more romantic?
Visit an animal shelter
There are so many animals at the animal shelter that just need someone to love on them. Why not make a date out of opening your heart to some innocent animals?
Build something together
Google an easy project to add a piece of furniture or decoration to your home. Visit Lowes or Home Depot to buy the supplies then start building your project together.
Go to karaoke
Head out to the local bar, have a few drinks (or not) and sing some karaoke with your spouse. How about a duet? Or serenade each other with a nice love song.
Even if you don’t have the guts to get up on stage yourselves, you can still have a good time watching other people perform.
