I love shopping at the dollar store because I can get so many of my staple items without spending a ton of money.
My all time favorite is Dollar Tree because everything literally costs $1 or less whereas places like Family Dollar or Dollar General have many items that are well over $1.
So if you really want to stretch your dollars, keep reading to find out what you should be purchasing at Dollar Tree.
In the past, I have always skipped buying birthday cards to accompany my gifts. Why? Because I’m cheap and I don’t like spending $3.99 or $4.99 for a card that probably will get thrown into trash within a week.
But Dollar Tree came and saved the day because not only do they sell cards that are guaranteed to be $1 or less, but most of their cards will run you only $.50 per card.
If you are running low on cash and need to buy a birthday card, Mother’s Day cards, etc. Dollar Tree has a wide selection of cards for you to choose from.
Buying your celebration cards from Dollar Tree is going to save you at least $3 or more and while $3 may not seem like must at first glance, those $3 sure add up over time.
Office & School Supplies
Now don’t go doing your back to school shopping at Dollar Tree because I promise you this is not gonna give you the biggest bang for your buck.
However, Dollar Tree is a great alternative during the school year or if you just need a few office/school supplies. They offer items individually or multipacks.
Some school supplies or office supplies you’ll be able to find at Dollar Tree are:
- Poster boards
I’ve shopped this section plenty of times because you will also find great learning supplements for your kids. As a homeschooling mama of 3, it can get expensive finding resources. But Dollar Tree helps mitigate some of those high priced items.
Dollar Tree can be a lifesaver when you are planning a birthday party or any kind of party, really.
They have an assortment of party related items such as:
- Gift bags
- Birthday candles
They even have decorations for weddings and graduations.
Much like party supplies and party favors, you can usually find holiday decor and favors for a dollar or less.
Most Dollar Tree stores display their holiday merchandise in the front so customers can see the selection they have during the holidays. They usually have sets ups for all your major holidays – Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Valentine’s Day, etc.
For cleaning supplies, I’ve seen both name brand and generic brands. I’ve seen Dawn, Fabuloso, Comet amongst others.
Some of the cleaning supplies you definitely can find at Dollar Tree are:
- Carpet freshener
- Surface cleaner
- Dish detergent
- Laundry bags/baskets
- Spray bottles
- Air fresheners, etc.
We all know how costly artificial flowers can be at crafts such as Michael’s or Joanns.
Dollar Tree is not gonna give you the greatest quality but their flowers can get the job done. I have seen people do DIY bouquets using flowers from Dollar Tree and they looked amazing.
They offer a variety of artificial flowers to decorate your home or use in your craft projects. It’s especially helpful to use Dollar Tree if you’re only making a one time project. No use in wasting additional money for something you don’t need longevity for.
- Pot holders
- Dish cloths/towels
- Coffee filters
- Ziploc bags
- Gadgets – apple slicer, peeler, strainer
If you just need some of the simple items, you definitely can buy them at Dollar Tree. They have your simple everyday needed items.
Pay attention to brand names.
Kitchen items to avoid buying at Dollar Tree
- Trash bags
- Frozen food
- Canned foods
- Plastic food containers
- Table cloths
Most of these items I would recommend avoiding simply due to the possible chemicals that have been linked to these items. But, I will say that Dollar Tree made a push to their suppliers to eliminate some harmful chemicals from their products by 2020. This article was posted in 2017 stating such.
What I found interesting is that some chemicals to remove were only targeted toward children’s products.
Beyond that, with these items, you really just want to make sure you have quality over frugality.
I get a lot of my personal products from Dollar Tree because for 1, I can generally find good brand name items and for 2, it saves me loads of money.
- Reading glasses
- They don’t have to be expensive to get the job done.
- Pregnancy tests/ovulation kits
- All I’m gonna say is my last pregnancy was confirmed with a Dollar Tree pregnancy test.
- Cotton balls (100 count)
- Q-tips (80 count – 140 count)
- Round cotton pads
- Panty liners
- CareFree brand
- Floss picks (name brand and off brand)
- They even offer the kids version of the floss picks.
- Toothbrushes/toothpaste (2-6 count)
- They have several brands you can choose from – Colgate, Scope, etc.
- You can also find travel size there.
Hair Products at Dollar Tree
Some of the different types of hair accessories you’ll find at Dollar Tree are:
- Hair ties
- Shower caps
- Hair clips
- Hair scarves
- Rubber bands
- Hair rollers
- Trimming scissors
Hair accessories can get to be a bit expensive and if you have little girls, the cost will add up over time. Sometimes, you’ll go to Walmart and a brush will cost almost $3. Add that cost to the cost of all the other hair supplies you need and hair supplies alone will empty your pockets.
Hair products to stay away from at Dollar Tree
These are the type of hair products that you either want to pay attention to the brand name or skip buying them from Dollar Tree all together.
- Hair creams and souffles
- Hair spray/mouse
- Hair repair treatments
When it comes to those products, you have to really be cautious about ingredients. You never know how these generic brands will react in your hair. So definitely, stick to the brands you know do well in your hair and if Dollar Tree doesn’t sell your brand, keep it moving.
How to save even more money at Dollar Tree
If you haven’t been using coupons, GIRL, where you been? Dollar Tree does accept coupons now. Of course, they have a coupon policy like any other store, but the fact of the matter is you can buy items for less than $1 at Dollar Tree if you play it smart with coupons.
You do NOT have to become one of those extreme couponing genius’ who walk around with multiple binders full of coupons. But, you should be using coupons for the items you purchase when there’s a coupon available.
One of my favorite sites for deal roundups is The Krazy Coupon Lady. She has a section on her website specifically for Dollar Tree. Each week, she’ll have a post showing all the deals that allow you save more money at Dollar Tree when you add coupons.
Shop online with Rakuten
Dollar Tree allows you to buy products online AND they’re on Rakuten too. If you’ve never heard of Rakuten, they allow you to earn cash back on purchases you make by first going through their website or app.
Rakuten sort of serves as an affiliate for Dollar Tree, so Dollar Tree pays them an amount any time they refer people to shop on their website, and in return Rakuten gives you some of the cut.
You’re still shopping from Dollar Tree’s official website, but you’ll be creating a shopping trip through Rakuten first so you can earn money back. By the way, you can also have your purchase shipped directly to the Dollar Tree store for pick up.
To learn more about Rakuten and how you can earn cash back at other stores too, check out this Rakuten Review!
Get cash back with iBotta
iBotta is another cash back app that allows you to claim offers on items before going to the store.
Download the app and search for Dollar Tree. Browse through the offers and claim any offer that suits you. After you’ve done your shopping at Dollar Tree, scan your receipt to redeem your offers.
Simple as that and iBotta will add your cash back amount to your account.
These are just some things that you should definitely be buying from Dollar Tree to save money every month.
And as you can see, they even carry loads of name brand items. So instead of paying extra from the name, hit up your Dollar Tree and get those same things for cheap.
